Cough Syrup:

A cough medicine in syrup form is used in an attempt to treat coughing and related conditions. There are different types of coughs - dry, wet, croupy, etc. For dry coughs, treatment with cough suppressants may be done to suppress the body's urge to cough, while in coughs that produce phlegm, treatment is done with expectorants (typically guaifenesin, in most commercial medications) that loosen mucus from the respiratory tract. Cough syrups may contain only the expectorant or only the suppressant or offer both together. Some may contain small amounts of alcohol and some may be alcohol free. Cough syrups may sugar free for the diabetic.
